“but ONE thing is necessary…”
In a world of SO MANY things, we need to be reminded that only ONE thing is necessary….. in Luke 10, we find the story of Jesus’ dinner at the house of Mary and Martha. When Martha vents her frustration over her sister’s lack of help with the dinner and preparations, Jesus respond:
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing necessary…”
I find it amazing that Jesus didn’t chastise Martha for complaining or tell her a parable about serving with gladness. He instead cut to the core of Martha’s real problem. She was hiding the confusion and turmoil of her heart with work, spiritual work. And what Christ says to her is that she needs to do the very thing she was calling her sister out for. Martha needed to sit in the presence of her Lord and hear him speak truth and life into her heart. She needed it more than anything else, we all do. We hide it in work, in recreation, in other problems but our MAIN PROBLEM is the same as Martha’s.
Our hearts are troubled over many things and we need to remember that ONE THING is necessary: to find restoration and respite in the presence of our Lord.
My prayers are becoming longer but more simple. Jesus was right, there is only one we need and that is to be connected with a God who is our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. Are you anxious today? Is your heart troubled by many things? If so, stop, and make time to sit at the feet of Jesus and drink in His presence and His peace.
